Why fence coatings fail here, and what to do about it

A fence line is the single most exposed thing on a Florida horse property. It gets full sun on both faces, it sits in wet grass every morning, and it takes physical abuse from horses leaning, cribbing and rubbing. A film-forming paint on a fence line in Marion County will typically start chalking in year two and lifting in year three — especially on the south and west faces.

The repair most farms get sold is another coat on top. That buys a season. What actually extends the life of the fence is honest triage: recoat the runs where the existing film is still bonded, and strip the runs where it is not. We walk the whole line with a scraper before we quote and mark it accordingly, so the estimate tells you which sections are cheap and which are not.

What a fence job includes

  • Four-board, three-board and two-board horse fence
  • Post-and-rail, split rail and perimeter fence
  • Paddock, arena and round-pen rails
  • Gates, latches, corner braces and gate posts
  • Entrance features, pillar caps and farm signage
  • Vinyl and no-climb mesh fence cleaning and post painting

Sprayed and back-brushed, never sprayed alone

Spraying a fence is fast, which is why a lot of crews stop there. The problem is that a sprayed coat sits on the surface of weathered timber rather than keying into it, so it comes off in sheets. We spray for speed and then immediately back-brush each rail to work the coating into the grain and into the checks. It is slower, it is the reason the job lasts, and it is the question worth asking any contractor who quotes you a fence line.

We also handle the parts most quotes quietly exclude — gate hardware masked rather than painted over, post tops coated so water does not sit on end grain, and the back face of the rails done as well as the road face. A fence painted only on the side the road sees is a fence you will be repainting in two years.

How the job runs

  1. Walk the line and measure

We measure linear feet, count rails and gates, and mark the runs that need stripping versus the runs that can be recoated.

  2. Wash

Low-pressure wash to remove chalk, mildew, pollen and grass splash. Fence coatings fail on dirty substrate more often than on bad product.

  3. Scrape, sand and spot-prime

Failing film comes off, bare timber gets primed, and any rotted rail is flagged for you to replace before we coat it.

  4. Spray and back-brush

Both faces, post tops and end grain. Gates and hardware masked.

  5. Paddock-by-paddock scheduling

We do one run at a time so you always have somewhere to turn out.

What it typically costs

Real ranges for Marion County and the surrounding counties, so you can sanity-check any quote you are given — ours included. Every job still gets a written, line-item estimate.

ScopeTypical rangeWhat moves the number
Four-board fence, recoat$1.75 – $2.75 / linear ftExisting coating sound, both faces, sprayed and back-brushed.
Four-board fence, strip and recoat$3.00 – $4.00 / linear ftWhere the existing film has failed and has to come off first.
Three-board fence, recoat$1.40 – $2.20 / linear ftSame spec, one fewer rail.
Gates and corner braces$45 – $150 eachDepends on size and on whether hardware is masked or removed.

Ranges are guidance for planning, not a quote. Condition of the existing surface moves the number more than size does.

Farm Fence Painting & Staining: common questions

How much does it cost to paint horse fence in Ocala?

Most four-board horse fence in Marion County runs $1.75 to $2.75 per linear foot to recoat, and $3.00 to $4.00 per linear foot if the existing coating has failed and needs stripping first. A quarter-mile run of four-board fence is roughly 1,320 linear feet, so expect somewhere between $2,300 and $5,300 depending on condition.

How often should farm fence be repainted?

In Marion County, every three to five years for black board fence. Sun exposure is the deciding factor — south and west facing runs usually need attention a full cycle earlier than shaded runs, which is why we quote by run rather than quoting the whole line at one price.

Do you paint both sides of the fence?

Yes, both faces plus post tops and end grain, as standard. A fence coated only on the road side will fail from the back and you will be repainting it in about two years.

Can you work around turnout?

Yes. We work paddock by paddock so there is always somewhere to put horses. We also pick up every cord, bucket and strip of tape before the end of the day rather than leaving the run staged overnight.

What colour should horse fence be?

Black is the Marion County default and hides dirt and hoof splash best. Dark brown and charcoal are the common alternatives. White looks superb for about four months and then shows every bit of red clay and grass splash, which is why most working farms here moved away from it.
