Why cabinet finishes chip, and how to stop it

Cabinet doors take more abuse than any other painted surface in a house. Fingernails, rings, grocery bags, cleaning spray, steam from the dishwasher, and cooking grease that builds up invisibly over years. Wall paint on a cabinet door will be chipping along the edges inside six months, which is why most people's experience of 'painted cabinets' is a bad one.

A finish that holds up needs three things that cheap jobs skip. First, degreasing — a thorough wash with a degreaser, because kitchen grease is invisible and nothing bonds to it. Second, deglossing — scuff-sanding the existing factory finish so the primer has a mechanical key. Third, a bonding primer followed by a true cabinet-grade enamel, sprayed rather than brushed, so the film levels hard and even.

What we refinish

  • Kitchen cabinets, islands and pantry doors
  • Bathroom vanities and linen cabinets
  • Laundry and mudroom cabinetry
  • Built-in shelving, entertainment units and office built-ins
  • Interior doors and door frames finished to the same standard
  • Laminate and thermofoil cabinets — with the correct bonding system
  • Glazed and distressed finishes where you want texture rather than flat colour

How the job runs in a working kitchen

Doors and drawer fronts come off on day one, numbered so every door goes back to the opening it came from, with hinges and hardware bagged per door. The boxes and face frames are sanded, primed and finished in place with the kitchen masked off. The doors are sprayed in a controlled space and come back when they have cured hard enough to handle.

You keep use of the kitchen throughout — the counters, sink, range and refrigerator stay available. You lose the cabinet doors for roughly four to seven days depending on the size of the kitchen and the cure schedule. We will tell you the exact window before we start so you can plan around it.

How the job runs

  1. Assess and quote

We check the substrate — real wood, veneer, laminate or thermofoil — because each needs a different primer system. You get the product named on the quote.

  2. Remove and number

Doors, drawer fronts and hardware off and labelled. Hinges bagged per door so nothing gets mismatched on reassembly.

  3. Degrease and degloss

Full degreaser wash followed by scuff sanding. This is the step that decides whether the finish chips.

  4. Bonding primer

Every surface, inside edges included. Laminate and thermofoil get a specialist adhesion primer.

  5. Spray finish

Two to three coats of cabinet-grade enamel, sprayed and levelled, with cure time between coats.

  6. Rehang and adjust

Doors back on their original openings, hinges adjusted so everything sits square, soft-close checked.

What it typically costs

Real ranges for Marion County and the surrounding counties, so you can sanity-check any quote you are given — ours included. Every job still gets a written, line-item estimate.

ScopeTypical rangeWhat moves the number
Average kitchen (20–30 doors + drawers)$2,500 – $4,500Boxes, face frames, doors and drawer fronts. Real wood or veneer.
Large kitchen with island (35+ doors)$4,500 – $6,500Includes island, pantry and any glass-front doors masked and cut in.
Bathroom vanity$350 – $800Depends on size and whether the existing finish is peeling and needs stripping.
Laminate or thermofoil surcharge+15 – 25%Requires a specialist bonding system and more careful edge work.

Ranges are guidance for planning, not a quote. Condition of the existing surface moves the number more than size does.

Cabinet Painting & Refinishing: common questions

Is it worth painting kitchen cabinets instead of replacing them?

If the boxes are sound and you like the layout, almost always. Refinishing an average Marion County kitchen runs $2,500 to $6,000 against $15,000 or more to replace. Replacement makes more sense when the boxes are water-damaged, the layout is wrong, or the doors are a style you cannot live with.

How long do painted cabinets last?

Eight to fifteen years when the prep is done properly — degreased, deglossed, bonding-primed and sprayed with a cabinet-grade enamel. The failures you hear about almost always come from someone rolling wall paint onto a greasy factory finish.

Can you paint laminate or thermofoil cabinets?

Yes, but they need a specialist adhesion primer and more careful edge work, so they carry a 15 to 25 percent surcharge. Thermofoil that is already peeling away from the substrate needs that section addressed first — we will tell you at the estimate.

How long will I be without cabinet doors?

Four to seven days for most kitchens. You keep the counters, sink, range and refrigerator throughout; it is only the doors and drawer fronts that leave. We give you the exact window before we start.

Will there be brush marks?

No. Doors and drawer fronts are sprayed, which leaves a level finish with no brush or roller texture. Face frames and boxes are sprayed in place behind masking wherever access allows.

Do you change the hardware?

We can install hardware you supply, and we can drill for new hardware where the hole spacing differs from the old. New handles on refinished doors is the cheapest possible way to make a kitchen read as new.
