The repair is only as good as the texture match

Most people notice a bad drywall repair not because the patch is uneven but because it is too smooth. Florida homes are almost all textured — knockdown on walls and ceilings, orange peel on newer builds, skip-trowel on some older houses — and a perfectly flat patch in a textured room catches the light differently and reads as a bright rectangle from across the room.

Each texture is a different tool, a different mud consistency and a different timing. Knockdown has to be sprayed and then flattened at exactly the right moment in the set. Orange peel is all about nozzle pressure. Skip-trowel is hand work. We sample onto scrap first, hold it against the wall, and adjust until it disappears, and only then do we touch the actual repair.

What we repair

  • Nail pops, screw pops and settlement cracks
  • Water damage from roof leaks, plumbing and air-conditioning condensate
  • Holes from furniture, doors, televisions and renovation work
  • Corner bead damage and cracked inside corners
  • Ceiling cracks and seam separation
  • Popcorn ceiling removal, skim coat and retexture
  • Full wall and ceiling retexture where patching is no longer enough

Water damage: find it before you cover it

Florida gives you three usual suspects for a water stain on a ceiling — a roof leak, a plumbing leak, or air-conditioning condensate backing up in the drain line. The repair is straightforward; identifying which one it is matters far more, because patching over an active leak means doing the repair twice.

We will tell you what the staining pattern suggests and recommend you get the source confirmed before we close it up. When we do repair it, the stain gets a stain-blocking primer first — water marks will bleed straight through ordinary paint, sometimes months later.

How the job runs

  1. Assess

Identify the texture, check for moisture, and establish whether the cause has been resolved.

  2. Cut and patch

Cut back to sound board, back the patch properly, and tape and mud in coats rather than one thick fill.

  3. Sand

Feathered wide so the transition does not telegraph under side light.

  4. Match texture

Sampled on scrap, held against the wall, adjusted until it disappears — then applied.

  5. Prime and paint

Stain-blocking primer on any water mark, then paint to a natural break so there is no patch halo.

What it typically costs

Real ranges for Marion County and the surrounding counties, so you can sanity-check any quote you are given — ours included. Every job still gets a written, line-item estimate.

ScopeTypical rangeWhat moves the number
Small patch (up to 12 in.)$150 – $350Includes texture match and paint to a natural break.
Water damage, ceiling section$350 – $900Assumes the source has been resolved. Includes stain-blocking primer.
Nail pops and cracks, whole house$450 – $1,200Commonly bundled with an interior repaint at a reduced rate.
Popcorn removal and retexture$1.75 – $3.25 / sq ftPre-1980 ceilings should be tested for asbestos before scraping.

Ranges are guidance for planning, not a quote. Condition of the existing surface moves the number more than size does.

Drywall Repair & Texture Matching: common questions

Can you match my existing wall texture?

Yes — knockdown, orange peel and skip-trowel are all standard for us. We sample onto scrap board first and hold it against the wall, adjusting the mud consistency and timing until it disappears, before we touch the actual repair.

Why does my repaired patch still show?

Almost always because the texture was not matched or the patch was not feathered wide enough. A flat patch in a textured room catches side light differently and reads as a bright rectangle. The fix is to retexture the patch and repaint to a natural break — a corner or a ceiling line — rather than stopping mid-wall.

Do I need to fix the leak before you repair the ceiling?

Yes. Patching over an active leak means paying for the repair twice. We will tell you what the staining pattern suggests — roof, plumbing or air-conditioning condensate — but the source should be confirmed and resolved before we close it up.

Do you paint after the repair or do I need another contractor?

We do both. One crew repairs, textures and paints, which also means there is nobody to blame but us if the patch shows.

Is popcorn ceiling removal worth doing?

It is the single biggest visual change you can make to an older Florida interior, and it makes the whole house feel newer. If the home was built before about 1980, have the ceiling tested for asbestos first — we will say so at the estimate rather than after.
