The work most painting companies will not take on
Decorative work sits in an awkward place: it is too fiddly for a production painting crew and too architectural for most artists. It takes someone who can run a professional job site and also spend a day on a lift laying in a starfield that reads correctly from a bed eleven feet below.
It is some of our favourite work, and it is also work we are honest about. A hand-painted ceiling is not a weekend add-on to a repaint. It gets its own scope, its own schedule and its own sample board, and you approve the sample before anything goes overhead.
What we do
- Night-sky and starfield ceilings, including vaulted and tray ceilings
- Children's room murals, name walls and themed accent walls
- Feature ceilings in deep colours with contrast trim
- Glazed, antiqued and distressed cabinetry

- Farm and barn signage, lettering and entrance features
- Faux timber, whitewash and limewash effects on interior beams
How a hand-painted ceiling comes together
A starfield ceiling is built in layers. The base coat goes on first — usually a deep charcoal, navy or near-black — and it has to be even, because every flaw in the base shows through the detail work. Then the depth layers: diffuse glow, nebula if you want it, and finally the stars themselves, placed by hand at varying size and brightness so the field reads as natural rather than stamped.
The part that takes judgement is density and scale. Stars that look right from six feet up a ladder look like a rash from a bed below, so the work is checked constantly from the floor, from the doorway, and lying down where the client will actually see it. We sample a section first and have you look at it from the bed before we commit to the whole ceiling.
How the job runs
Design conversation
We talk through the effect you want, the room's light, and where it will be seen from.
Sample board
The finish is painted on board and viewed in the actual room, in the actual light, before anything is committed.
Base coat
Prep and base colour applied evenly — flaws in the base show through every layer above it.
Detail layers
Built up in stages, checked constantly from the floor and from where the room is actually used.
Review and refine
You see it from the bed, the doorway and the sofa before we call it finished.
What it typically costs
Real ranges for Marion County and the surrounding counties, so you can sanity-check any quote you are given — ours included. Every job still gets a written, line-item estimate.
| Scope | Typical range | What moves the number |
|---|---|---|
| Night-sky ceiling, bedroom | $1,200 – $3,500 | Includes base coat. Vaulted and tray ceilings sit at the upper end. |
| Night-sky ceiling, great room | $3,000 – $7,500 | Priced by area, height and detail density. |
| Children's mural or name wall | $600 – $2,500 | Depends on complexity and whether characters are involved. |
| Glazed or distressed cabinetry | +20 – 40% | On top of standard cabinet refinishing. |
Ranges are guidance for planning, not a quote. Condition of the existing surface moves the number more than size does.
Specialty Finishes & Hand-Painted Ceilings: common questions
How much does a hand-painted starry ceiling cost?
A bedroom ceiling typically runs $1,200 to $3,500 including the base coat, and a vaulted great room $3,000 to $7,500. Price is driven by ceiling area, height and how dense and detailed you want the starfield, not by hours on site.
Will it look dated in a few years?
A starfield ceiling is one base coat away from being an ordinary dark feature ceiling, which is a far easier reversal than wallpaper or a textured treatment. We will tell you what it would cost to take it back at the same time as we quote putting it in.
Can you do murals in a child's room?
Yes — name walls, themed accent walls and character work are regular requests. We sample the palette on board first so you approve the colours before they go on the wall, and we use low-VOC products throughout for a child's room.
Do you do this as part of a whole-house repaint?
Often, but it is scoped and scheduled separately rather than squeezed into the repaint week. Decorative work needs its own time and its own approval step, and compressing it is how it goes wrong.
Can you glaze or distress cabinets rather than paint them flat?
Yes. Glazed, antiqued and distressed finishes add roughly 20 to 40 percent over standard cabinet refinishing, and we always sample on a spare door first so you can see the depth of the glaze before we commit the kitchen.
